Catherine is looking forward to a brighter future for herself and her two children
Catherine’s story
It was the Children, Family & Wellbeing team who put me in touch with Steve from Key for employment support. I have two children and my eldest child has autism and learning difficulties. I’m lucky though because I do have a lot of support around me but I sometimes I struggle with my mental health and I have a condition that affects my mood.
What I like about Steve is that he’s never looked down his nose at me. He’s always given me lots of encouragement and praise. I don’t get on with my mum and I’ve just lost my dad so having someone like Steve to support me has really helped. I feel that Steve is always available, he always picks up the phone. He never judges me and I feel comfortable with him. He has given me practical support like helping me with college and giving advice about which jobs to go for. I have difficulty writing sometimes and have low confidence. Steve makes me feel like I can do it, whatever it is, and he makes me feel positive about myself and my abilities.
I’m starting a job at the end of this month as a Support Worker helping adults with disabilities. I’m really looking forward to starting work because I am hoping this role will give me a better understanding of my own son’s needs. I have had other jobs before cleaning and in a call centre but they weren’t right for me. I’m really hopeful this job is the one that will mean a new career and a brighter future for myself and my children.
